If you are a man watching your hairline slip back a few millimeters every year, or noticing the crown thinning every time someone takes a photo from above, you are part of a very large club. Roughly two out of three American men will experience meaningful hair loss by age 35, and by 50 that number climbs above 85%. Male pattern hair loss is the most common cosmetic concern men quietly carry — and for decades the options were grim: a daily pill, a foamy lotion, or major surgery.
That landscape has changed. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy has emerged as one of the most effective non-surgical hair restoration tools available to men today. It is drug-free, uses your own biology, requires no downtime, and — when delivered correctly — can visibly thicken thinning areas and slow the progression of male pattern baldness. At Remedy+ Hair Restoration & Medical Spa in Grand Rapids, PRP has become one of our most requested treatments for men, and for good reason.
Why Men Lose Hair in the First Place
Male pattern baldness, clinically called androgenetic alopecia, is driven mostly by genetics and a hormone byproduct called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT binds to receptors on genetically susceptible hair follicles — typically at the temples, hairline, and crown — and progressively shrinks them through a process called miniaturization. The follicle is not dead. It is shrinking. Each new hair cycle produces a slightly thinner, shorter, lighter strand until eventually the follicle stops producing visible hair at all.
This is why timing matters so much. A miniaturizing follicle can often be rescued. A truly dormant one is much harder to revive. The single biggest predictor of PRP success in men is starting before the follicle gives up entirely.
What PRP Actually Is
PRP is not a drug, a synthetic hormone, or a foreign substance. It is a concentrated extract of your own blood. A small vial is drawn from your arm, spun in a medical centrifuge, and separated into three layers: red blood cells, platelet-poor plasma, and the gold layer in the middle — platelet-rich plasma packed with growth factors.
Those growth factors — PDGF, VEGF, EGF, TGF, IGF-1 and others — are the same biochemical signals your body uses to heal a cut or rebuild tissue after injury. When delivered into the scalp via tiny injections at the level of the hair follicle, they do four things that matter for men with thinning hair:
- Wake up dormant follicles and push them from the resting (telogen) phase back into active growth (anagen).
- Increase blood supply to the follicle by stimulating new capillary formation.
- Thicken the hair shaft itself so existing hairs come back fuller and more pigmented.
- Slow miniaturization, buying genetically vulnerable follicles more years of productive life.
What Makes PRP Different for Men
Men's hair loss patterns differ from women's, and the protocol should too. At Remedy+ we adjust three things specifically for male patients:
- Injection mapping. Men typically lose hair in a predictable Norwood pattern — temples and crown first, vertex later. We target injection density to where DHT damage is most aggressive rather than scattering treatment evenly across the scalp.
- Concentration of platelets. Male androgenic follicles are under heavier hormonal attack than typical female-pattern thinning. We aim for higher platelet concentration (5–7x baseline) to overcome that resistance.
- Combination protocols. Men almost always do better when PRP is paired with a DHT-blocker (oral or topical finasteride) and/or topical minoxidil. PRP grows hair; the medications protect what PRP grew.
What the Treatment Day Looks Like
A PRP appointment at Remedy+ takes about 45 to 60 minutes from start to finish. The flow is simple:
- Consult and photos. We document baseline hair density with standardized lighting so we can objectively measure your response at 3, 6, and 12 months.
- Blood draw. Roughly 30–60 mL of blood is drawn from your arm — equivalent to a routine lab test.
- Centrifuge processing. Your blood spins in a closed, FDA-cleared kit for about 10 minutes to isolate the PRP layer.
- Numbing. A topical anesthetic plus optional cold-air cooling significantly reduces discomfort.
- Injections. A series of small injections delivers PRP into the dermis at follicle depth across the target zones.
- Walk out. No bandages, no downtime. You can drive yourself home and return to work the same day.
Mild scalp redness or tenderness is normal for 24–48 hours. We ask men to skip the gym, sauna, and hats for the first day, and to hold off on shampoo for about 8 hours. That is the entire recovery.
Realistic Results and Timeline
PRP is not a one-and-done treatment. It is a series. The standard Remedy+ protocol for men is three initial sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, followed by maintenance treatments every 4–6 months. Here is what most men can expect:
- Weeks 2–6: Shedding often increases temporarily as resting follicles are pushed back into the growth cycle. This is a good sign, not a failure.
- Months 3–4: Reduced daily shedding, finer "baby hairs" emerging in thinning zones, and improved scalp coverage in photos.
- Months 6–9: Visible density gains. Existing hair shafts are thicker and darker. The hairline edge looks softer rather than translucent.
- Month 12: Peak result from the initial series, sustained with maintenance.
Published studies consistently show 30–40% increases in hair count and meaningful gains in shaft thickness across men with mild-to-moderate androgenetic alopecia. Men with very advanced loss (Norwood 6–7) generally need to be evaluated for surgical hair restoration with NeoGraft® or SmartGraft® instead of, or in addition to, PRP.
Who Is — and Isn't — a Good Candidate
The men who get the best PRP results share a few traits:
- Hair loss in the early to moderate range (Norwood 2–5).
- Active hair follicles still visible in the thinning zones, even if the hairs are short and fine.
- General good health, no clotting disorders, and not currently on blood thinners.
- Willing to commit to the full initial series and maintenance schedule.
PRP is not the right tool for completely smooth, fully scarred bald zones. Once the follicle is gone, no amount of growth factor will bring it back — that is when we transition the conversation to surgical hair restoration. We will tell you honestly during your consultation which category you fall into.
How PRP Fits With Other Men's Treatments at Remedy+
The men who get truly outstanding results almost never do PRP in isolation. Hair loss is multifactorial — hormones, blood supply, inflammation, nutrition, and stress all play a role — so the best plan attacks it from several angles at once. Common combinations we use:
- PRP + finasteride/minoxidil: PRP regrows; medications defend against DHT. This is the gold-standard combo.
- PRP + nutritional support: Targeted supplementation for ferritin, vitamin D, zinc, and biotin when labs reveal a deficiency.
- PRP + weight optimization: Men carrying significant excess weight often have elevated inflammatory markers that worsen hair loss. Our medical weight loss program addresses the metabolic side.
- PRP + Botox for the forehead and crow's feet: Many men book Botox at the same appointment so that a fuller hairline is paired with a refreshed, less-tired upper face.
- PRP + surgical restoration: For Norwood 5+ patients, PRP is used after a SmartGraft® or NeoGraft® session to accelerate graft survival and density.
What PRP Costs — and How to Make It Manageable
PRP is an investment, but compared to a lifetime of pills, foams, and concealing powders, the math usually favors PRP. Most men complete the initial three-session series within four months and then return for one or two maintenance sessions per year.
To make budgeting easier, Remedy+ offers two financing partners for qualified applicants — see our financing page for current options including 0% APR plans. Many men also choose to enroll in our Love Your Face membership to bundle PRP, Botox, skincare, and other treatments into a single monthly rhythm with member-only pricing.
The Privacy Most Men Want
We will say what most clinics dance around: men generally want hair restoration handled discreetly. That is why every PRP consultation at Remedy+ is one-on-one with a clinician, in a private treatment room, with no waiting-area parade. You walk in, have your blood drawn, get treated, and walk back out with nothing visible to indicate what you came in for. There is no shaved scalp, no obvious bandage, no telltale sign at work the next day.
Ready to See If PRP Is Right for You?
If your hair has been quietly thinning and you have been quietly putting off doing anything about it, the most important thing you can do is get evaluated before more follicles cross the point of no return. A complimentary consultation at Remedy+ in Grand Rapids includes a detailed scalp assessment, density photography, a candid discussion of all the tools available to you (PRP, medications, supplements, surgery), and a personalized plan. No pressure, no upsell — just an honest conversation about what your hair can realistically do, and how to get it there.
The earlier you start, the more hair we can save and rebuild. That is the bottom line.
