Surgical Hair Restoration: A Modern Guide to NeoGraft® and SmartGraft®

If you're tired of watching your hairline retreat or feeling self-conscious about a thinning crown, you're not alone — and you're not stuck. Modern surgical hair restoration has come a very long way from the obvious "hair plugs" of the past. At Remedy+ Hair Restoration & Medical Spa in Grand Rapids, Michigan, we offer two of the most advanced minimally-invasive hair transplant systems in the world: NeoGraft® and SmartGraft®. Both deliver permanent, natural-looking results with virtually no downtime and no linear scar.

The Hook: A Permanent Fix in a Single Day

Imagine walking into the clinic in the morning with a thinning hairline and walking out the same afternoon with the foundation for a fuller, denser head of hair that will keep growing for the rest of your life. That's the promise of modern follicular unit extraction (FUE) — and it's no longer marketing hyperbole. It's the day-to-day reality for our hair restoration patients across West Michigan.

    What Is Surgical Hair Restoration?

Surgical hair restoration is the process of relocating healthy, genetically resistant hair follicles from the back and sides of your scalp (the "donor area") to areas of thinning or balding (the "recipient area"). Because the donor follicles are biologically programmed to resist DHT — the hormone responsible for male and female pattern baldness — they continue to grow normally for life once transplanted.

Two main techniques exist: the older Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), which involves cutting a strip of scalp and leaves a long linear scar, and the modern Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), which removes individual follicular units one at a time using a precise punch. At Remedy+, we exclusively use FUE technology because it's gentler, faster healing, and leaves no visible scar.

Meet NeoGraft® — The Original Automated FUE System

NeoGraft® was the first FDA-cleared automated FUE system on the market and remains a gold standard for surgical hair restoration. It uses gentle pneumatic suction to extract follicular units one at a time without the manual force that can damage grafts.

    Why NeoGraft® Stands Out

    • No scalpels, no stitches, no linear scar — patients can wear their hair short post-procedure
    • Faster harvest times than manual FUE, allowing more grafts in a single session
    • Higher graft survival rates thanks to gentle handling and short out-of-body times
    • Minimal discomfort performed under local anesthesia with optional oral sedation
    • Quick recovery — most patients return to work within 1–2 days

Meet SmartGraft® — The Next Generation

SmartGraft® builds on the FUE foundation with several refinements that improve graft viability and patient experience. Its closed-system harvesting keeps follicles hydrated and at optimal temperature from extraction through implantation.

    Why SmartGraft® Is a Game-Changer

    • Built-in storage chamber keeps grafts in a controlled environment, dramatically improving survival rates
    • Real-time graft counting ensures precise donor management
    • Smaller punch sizes (as small as 0.8mm) for less trauma to the donor area
    • Minimal "pluck-and-store" time — grafts spend less time outside the body, which translates to denser, healthier regrowth
    • Suitable for both men and women across all hair types and skin tones

NeoGraft® vs. SmartGraft® — Which Is Right for You?

Honestly, both are excellent. Your provider at Remedy+ will recommend a system based on your donor density, the size of the area being treated, your hair type, and your goals. Many patients are equally good candidates for either platform, and final outcomes are remarkably similar — natural-looking, permanent, undetectable hair restoration.

    Who Is a Good Candidate?

You may be an excellent candidate for surgical hair restoration if you:

    • Have a stable pattern of hair loss (typically Norwood III or higher in men, Ludwig I–II in women)
    • Possess sufficient donor hair on the back and sides of the scalp
    • Are in good general health
    • Have realistic expectations about coverage and density
    • Want a permanent, one-time solution to thinning
    • Have tried — or want to combine surgery with — non-surgical options like PRP therapy, Revian Red, finasteride or minoxidil, or hair supplements

The Day of Your Procedure: What to Expect

    Step 1 — Consultation & Hairline Design

Before any procedure, you'll meet with our team to map your existing pattern, discuss your goals, and design a hairline that suits your facial proportions and ages naturally. We never overpromise: a great result is one that looks completely natural at age 35 and at age 65.

    Step 2 — Donor Preparation

The donor area at the back of the head is trimmed short and numbed with local anesthesia. You'll be comfortable, awake, and able to watch a movie, listen to music, or even take calls during the procedure.

    Step 3 — Extraction

Using NeoGraft® or SmartGraft®, follicular units are gently extracted one at a time. Sessions typically range from 4–8 hours depending on the number of grafts (anywhere from 1,200 to 2,500+ in a single day).

    Step 4 — Implantation

Tiny recipient sites are created in the thinning areas at the precise angle, depth, and direction of natural growth. Each graft is then placed by hand into its new home.

    Step 5 — Aftercare

You'll go home the same day with detailed instructions. Most patients return to desk work within 24–48 hours and resume exercise after 7–10 days.

Recovery and the Hair Growth Timeline

    • Days 1–7: Mild swelling, redness, and tiny scabs in the recipient area. These resolve quickly.
    • Weeks 2–4: Transplanted hairs shed — this is normal and expected ("shock loss"). The follicles remain alive and healthy beneath the surface.
    • Months 3–4: New growth begins to emerge.
    • Months 6–9: Visible thickening and density.
    • Months 12–18: Final results — fuller, natural-looking hair you can style any way you like.

    Combining Surgery with Non-Surgical Treatments

The best long-term results come from a combination approach. Surgery restores what's been lost; medical therapies protect what you still have. Most of our hair restoration patients also use PRP injections, an at-home Revian Red light cap, and a maintenance regimen of finasteride and/or minoxidil to slow ongoing genetic loss.
